VoiceThread Transition

The WSU VoiceThread license will expire at the end of Fall 2024 semester. If you were planning to use VoiceThread in the Spring 2025 semester and beyond, you will need implement an alternative.  Review details in the VoiceThread communication.

If you are using VoiceThread, please review the list below for how to transition to another application.  You should download any media you wish to retain or transfer to another application, as it will no longer be accessible once the VoiceThread license expires. If you are not transferring that media to another application, the WSU Records Retention and Disposition Policy can guide you in media download decisions. 

Alternatives to Using VoiceThread

Instructors can use Panopto to record their course videos. They can also download their current VoiceThread content, and upload to Panopto.

Panopto has quizzing and discussion features. Panopto quizzes integrate with the Canvas Gradebook.

There are two options for replacing VoiceThread Watch Assignments:

  1. Use the Panopto quizzing feature and link it to a Canvas assignment.
  2. Download Panopto view statistics.

There are two options for replacing VoiceThread Create Assignments:

  1. Students can create Panopto videos in Canvas assignments, discussion boards, and quizzes.
  2. For group presentation or collaboration, students can record in Zoom, then upload the recording file to Panopto.

There are two options for replacing VoiceThread Comment Assignments:

  1. Use the Panopto discussion feature.
  2. Students can watch videos in Perusall and comment on the video. Perusall has autograding features.

Students can create Panopto videos in Canvas assignments, discussion boards, and quizzes. Students can then view their peer’s videos in the course assignment folder.

There are two options for replacing VoiceThread as a tool for critique or peer review.

  1. Students can create a Panopto video, then link it in a Canvas assignment or discussion board.
  2. Students can use the Panopto discussion feature.

Students can record their project collaboratively on Zoom, then upload the recording to Panopto. If you want other students to see the presentations, they can embed the recording in a Canvas discussion board or review other group’s recordings in the course assignment folder.
