On Wednesday, August 2, 2023, Perusall will be upgraded from LTI 1.1 to LTI 1.3. This upgrade will offer many benefits for Perusall users including a new roster sync and improved grade sync options.
What does this mean for your course?
- If you plan to use Perusall in Fall 2023, please wait to enable Perusall in your Canvas course space until after the upgrade is complete on August 3rd. After this date, follow the steps below for instructions on getting started with Perusall LTI 1.3.
- If you enabled Perusall in your Fall 2023 Canvas course space before August 3rd, or if you have questions on how to setup Perusall 1.3, please email aoi.li@wsu.edu for assistance in switching your course to LTI 1.3.
STEP 1: CLEAR YOUR BROWSER CACHE
STEP 2: REMOVE PERUSALL ASSIGNMENTS FROM CANVAS
Before activating Perusall 1.3, it is important to remove any existing assignments and links currently in your Canvas course space as they point to the old Perusall version.
- Delete all existing Perusall assignments from Assignments in your Canvas course space.
- Remove any other existing links to Perusall reading assignments in modules, pages, and/or discussions, if applicable.
STEP 3: ACTIVATE PERUSALL 1.3 IN CANVAS
- Go to your Canvas course space.
- Select Settings at the bottom of the left navigation menu.
- Once in Settings, select the Navigation tab at the top of the page.
- In the Navigation tab, locate Perusall 1.3 from the list of applications, then select the three vertical dots to the right of the name and select Enable.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save.
- Perusall 1.3 will now appear in the left navigation menu.
STEP 4: MIGRATE YOUR EXISTING PERUSALL CONTENT
- Select Perusall 1.3 in the left navigation menu.
- This will launch Perusall, and if you have used Perusall in the past, it will display a one-time “confirm and merge accounts” message. You will receive an email shortly after with instructions on how to complete the process. NOTE: this will be a one time step only, and you will not receive an email for any addition courses in which you setup Perusall 1.3.
- After selecting the Confirm request button in your email, navigate back to Canvas, refresh your browser, and then select Perusall 1.3 from the left navigation menu.
- This will open a blank Perusall course.
- Now, you can copy over your materials from your past course, as usual. Go to the Perusall Library, select +Add content and then select Materials from another course from the menu on the right.
- Find the Perusall course you want to copy from the dropdown menu.
- Choose the materials, assignments, and course settings you want to copy, and select Ok.
- If you would like to double check your assignment deadlines, select Edit deadlines. This page will allow you to review and update assignment due dates. If you make any changes, be sure to select Save changes.
- You should also check the scoring range is correct for your assignments. If all assignments are scored the same, go Settings > Scoring > General. In the section labeled Assignment score range, you can set total points; leave the first setting at 0 and set the second range to the total points possible. Select Save changes.
- You’re all set to use the Perusall 1.3 and its new features in this course! Follow these steps in any other course in which you are using Perusall.
STEP 5: LINK PERUSALL ASSIGNMENTS IN CANVAS
Now that Perusall 1.3 is connected to your course space, Canvas assignments that are linked to your Perusall readings will be created automatically. You will find the assignments in Canvas under Assignments in the left navigation menu. Any changes that you make in Perusall (ie: instructions, point value, etc) will be automatically updated in the Canvas assignment.
Students can access their Perusall readings either through the individual assignments or through Perusall 1.3 in the left navigation menu. You can link the Perusall assignments in modules or pages, as you do with other assignments in Canvas.
